As a Legal Document Assistant I may only serve people representing themselves — B&P § 6400(c) bars me from touching a represented party's matter. As a contract paralegal I work exclusively under an attorney's direction and supervision — B&P §§ 6450–6456 — which is a different role, a different statute, and a different client relationship, kept on separate intake and separate files.

Straight answers, before you call

Is it legal to hire a freelance paralegal in California?+
Yes. California B&P Code §§ 6450–6456 expressly permits attorneys to engage a freelance, independent-contractor paralegal, provided the work is performed under the direction and supervision of an active State Bar member and the paralegal doesn't perform any of the prohibited activities in § 6125.
Can a paralegal work for multiple attorneys?+
Yes — nothing in § 6450 limits a freelance paralegal to one firm. Each engagement is independently supervised and independently conflict-checked; that's exactly the arrangement contract paralegal work is built for.
What does B&P § 6450 compliance actually require from a contract paralegal?+
Three things: supervision by an active member of the State Bar, no unauthorized practice of law under § 6125, and documentation — an engagement letter, a supervision memo, and a conflicts check — that shows the arrangement on paper, not just in practice.
Can I bill my client for contract paralegal time?+
Generally yes, at your firm's normal paralegal billing rate, subject to your fee agreement and any applicable ethics guidance on markup — that's a question for your own bar association's ethics opinions, not something a paralegal can advise you on.
What does Rule 5.3 supervision of a remote paralegal look like in practice?+
A written supervision memo, defined review checkpoints before anything is filed or served, and a paralegal who never has independent client contact on substantive matters — the same standard as supervising in-house staff, applied to remote work.
Does using an outside paralegal create a supervision problem?+
No — not when the work is delegated and supervised exactly as §6450 describes, which is how this desk is built. You direct, you review, you sign; nothing here changes what you're already responsible for, it just removes the hours.
Will my client know the work came from outside my office?+
Only if you say so. Work product carries your firm's formatting, and there is no contact with your client unless you specifically hand that over.
You also serve pro-per clients. Is that a conflict?+
No — see "A Walled Desk" above: separate intake, separate files, and a conflict check before any attorney matter is accepted.
Do you use AI?+
Selectively, and never with your client's information. Consistent with the California State Bar's 2026 generative-AI guidance, no confidential client information is ever entered into an AI system — AI only ever touches non-confidential drafting and formatting work, and every AI-assisted output is personally reviewed before it reaches you, the same standard the State Bar now holds attorneys to for AI-generated citations. Used this way, it keeps turnaround fast without changing who's responsible for the work: I am. Per the State Bar of California's Standing Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct, Practical Guidance for the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in the Practice of Law (2026).
Is any of this offshored or AI-generated?+
